Starfruit is in season! My relative (Hong-Mei) gave me two. So I sliced one up for breakfast.
Then for dinner I decided to try the stewed version of stinky tofu. It's called mala stinky tofu 麻辣臭豆腐. I discovered king oyster mushrooms during my visit to Cingshuei and the night market had some, so I ordered some of those also. However on my quest to find ice slush (冰沙), I discovered a local vender that sells a different variation. It includes Yakult in it. Win! So I walked home with some mala stinky tofu (麻辣臭豆腐) with fried king oyster mushroom (杏鮑菇, xìng bào gū) and passion fruit+Yakult (百香果養樂多冰沙) ice slush. Thats my triple threat yummyness for the evening. For the people reading this that know what these are, Doesn't it make your mouth salivate?
Um... triple jealous! I can't recreate the mala stinky tofu or passion fruit/Yakult ice slush at home, but the fried king oyster mushroom I think I can try. Did they fry it with anything - basil, chili peppers? Any seasoning or dipping sauce?
ReplyDeleteThey fried with basil. no chili peppers. Then powdered with brown seasoning. I don't know what it is. probably msg. then optionally i always add the red pepper powder. The skin isn't fried like KFC chicken, it just heats it up. Probably because there is no breading to fry. Good luck, tell me if you successful.
ReplyDeleteUm is it November yet?! :D
ReplyDeleteI'll give the fried king oyster mushroom with basil a try at home. Instead of the mysterious brown seasoning or red pepper powder, I can try a light sprinkling of togarashi spice to give it a kick. I'll let you know how it turns out...
ReplyDeleteI tried frying king oyster mushroom at home (at least I think it's king oyster - it might have been abalone) but it didn't work out. I think maybe an egg wash and breadcrumbs or panko might work better. Did I tell you? I made deep-fried lasagna bites for a Iron Chef-style Lasagna Throwdown Challenge at my friend's place this past weekend. I didn't win, but it was FUN to make! :)
ReplyDeleteKing Oyster Mushroom is really big. most piece i eat here are about 6 inches in length. The fried ones here don't have breading, but I did find ones in Kaohsiung that were breaded. When I return, i'd like to try some deep fried lasagna!
ReplyDeleteI never got to try star fruit while I lived in TW. I'm not a big fan of stinky tofu (at all) but the bing sounds good. :)
ReplyDeleteHave you gotten past the smell and ate it though?
